Why take it
The core of travel insurance is medical cost, not lost luggage or delays. In some countries a single emergency room visit can exceed the entire cost of the trip, and if transport home becomes necessary the figure gains another digit. Late baggage is an inconvenience; medical bills can reach a scale that affects life after the trip.
Read the exclusions first
Choosing a policy invites comparing cover amounts, but exclusions are what actually cause problems. What is not covered sits near the back of the terms, and most failed claims fall there.
- Conditions existing before purchase
- Hazardous activities such as some water and snow sports, or climbing
- Incidents involving alcohol
- Riding a motorcycle without the correct licence
- Regions under a travel warning
Documents a claim needs
Treatment abroad requires a diagnosis, receipts and a record of what was done. These are very hard to obtain later if you do not collect them locally. Theft needs a police report, and delayed baggage needs a report issued by the airline. In every case, the point is gathering the paperwork on the spot.
Check for cover you already have
Some credit cards provide travel cover when the flight is paid with that card, and carrier or airline membership tiers sometimes include it. Such cover often has narrow conditions and low limits, so confirm the scope rather than relaxing because it exists.
When to buy
Most policies can only be bought before departure and not once you have left. Handling it alongside flights and accommodation is the safe habit. Cancellation cover in particular usually only works if bought soon after booking, because reasons already foreseeable at purchase are excluded.
